“We Would Have Won World Cup With Me Playing”
The relationship between German goalkeepers Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmann has often been disfunctional. It is likely that after Kahn’s revelations today, things aren’t set to get any between between them.
Kahn has claimed that had he been chosen to play between the sticks in the World Cup, Germany would have won it. He bases this upon “logic”, and insists this is not a criticism of Lehmann.
“With me (playing), Germany would have been World champions,” said Kahn. “I’m convinced of it because the way my career has evolved points in that direction. In 1994 with Karlsruhe I reached the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup – two years later I won this trophy with Bayern Munich. In 1999 I lost the UEFA Champions League final in the harshest circumstances before winning this competition two years later. Finally I lost the 2002 World Cup final. This logic, and I really believe in the law of series, should have continued at the 2006 World Cup.”
Does Kahn seriously believe that football works in the way he describes? A player wins one compeition, loses the next? Or is this just another dig at his former rival goalkeeper?
Kahn has had this discussion with Klinsmann, but the Germany coach dismissed his theory. “I told him ‘I don’t understand why you won’t admit that I’m right’,” Kahn added.

Exactly which of Italy’s 2 late goals would Kahn have stopped in the WC semi-final? The first one, in particular, was the killer blow. From what I can see, Lehmann’s positioning was absolutely orthodox, and then he – arguably PL’s and CL’s top goalie last season – stretched himself to his utmost to reach the ball, but couldn’t get anywhere near it. No keeper in the world could have saved that shot.
In short, Kahn is deluding himself.
Kahn isn’t talking about specifics. He’s talking about his “logic”
His logic is that because he lost in the World Cup in 2002, if he had been playing this time round, Germany would have won. Why? Because in his life time, he has played in competitions when they lose, and then win. Makes perfect sense to me
That’s a joke, Kahn was dropped for a reason, that reason was he was not up to the job. Lehmann was chosen for a reason, that reason was for upping his game in his quite public battle with Kahn and in doing so became one of the best keepers in the world (last season).
The to me stinks of bitterness and repulsion that one of Kahns bitterest enemies beat him to his FINAL post, there will be no more World Cups for Kahn, that WAS his LAST chance.
Of course, through Kahns eyes, the logic is there. But though anyone else, there is little/no logic.
Goodbye Kahn I hope it hurts inside
I think this guy delusional thoughts.
His logic is baseless because, in the uefa and champion leagues which he had wonevery 2 years after being a loser. There were cup finals after he had loost the following years and he did not win. Those cup competion are helt annually and not every 2 years.
secondly, he lost the 2002 world cup but the 2006 was the following finals after he had lost. The logic is Khan should win the next cup for his country as it would be next 2nd finals after he had lost in 2002 to comply with his so called logic as he had won the previous competions on 2nd finals after he had lost.
“Some people have big head but small brains whilst others have small head but big brains.” I think Khan has the former.
Secondly
“You don’t have to be mad to be a goalkeeper…but it does help.” Olly gives yet another example!
it may sound logic, but it’s too late now.
cry baby, cry.
