Wayne Rooney: The Latest England Fan Victim

Fans are a fickle bunch. One moment they’re hailing a player/manager as their god, the next they are singing chants to get them out. No fans are more fickle than England fans. Before the World Cup in 98, David Beckham was England’s hero. One stupid mistake and people are hanging and burning effigies of the man. Four years later, David Beckham is England’s captain and scores a blinding freekick which puts England in to the World Cup finals. Manchester United used to sing to the away fans “Did you cheer when Beckham scored?” And of course they did, and all the vile acts of hatred were forgotten.

On Wednesday night, more disgusting behaviour from England fans was seen. As the England players got on to the bus, England fans followed behind, shouting abuse. Rooney got back off the bus to listen to what was said. He was greeted with, "You ****** fat bastard, why don't you show some pride when you shirt," and then the fan unzipped his flies and threatened to urinate on Rooney. Rooney flicked the fan the v sign, and then got on the bus. A fan who was witnessed this wrote on the FA’s forum: "I saw Rooney flick the 'v's' at us. However, in his defence he came off the coach and was prepared to listen to what some of the England fans said about us following the team around the world and getting nothing back. Rooney's reply was 'you come and play then', which I don't think was said in a negative way."

Will this same fan be chanting Rooney’s name and cheering next time he scores a goal? Of course. And so it continues…
