Today’s news… Premiership roundup

Two London derbies today, and two rather surprising results. Firstly, Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-1 at home. The scoring was opened by Chelsea with Makelele, who rarely finds the net for the blues. His goal was cancelled out ten minutes later by Dawson. Lennon put Spurs in front with a superb goal after half time. With just under half an hour to go, John Terry got sent off for a second yellow card. Before today, Spurs hadn’t beaten Chelsea in the league since 1990, when Gary Linekar scored the winner! Chelsea remain second in the league, but are now three points behind leaders Manchester United.

Elsewhere, West Ham picked up their third win of the season at home to Arsenal. The game appeared as though it was going to end 0-0, despite Arsenal’s continued attacking, until Harewood, a minute from time, scored the winning goal. This caused a furious row between the two managers, and no handshake at the final whistle. Pardew has sinced offered an appology to Wenger, saying he meant no harm by his celebration after the late winner.

Blackburn lost 2-0 to Aston Villa, with their goals being scored within nine minutes, the first a disputed penalty. Mark Hughes voiced his unhappiness with the referee after the match.

Today’s news… Premiership roundup

By at 4 November, 2006, 3:21 pm

There were eight Premiership fixtures played today. Manchester United kept their grip as league leaders after a convincing 3-0 win against Portsmouth. Much like the Bolton game of the weekend before, United totally dominated play for the first half, scoring two within the first ten minutes. The first a penalty from Louis Saha, after it was adjudged Rooney was brought down in the area. The second was a stunning free kick from Cristiano Ronaldo. There was never any doubt who was going to walk away with the three points, and Vidic made that certain in the 66th minute, with a header from a Gary Neville cross.

Elsewhere, Liverpool continued their good recent home form with a 2-0 win over Reading. New signing Kuyt got both the goals in the game. After a hammering at the Reebok by Manchester United, Bolton failed to return to their old selves, and suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Wigan. McCulloch got the goal ten minutes from time. Struggling Watford managed a 2-0 home win against Middlesborough, taking them out of the relegation zone. Manchester City lost away at Charlton, with Darren Bent scoring in the 28th minute. Goalkeeper Carson had a superb game, and his team can thank him for keeping them in the game. Finally, Newcastle lost to Sheffield United at home, putting them down to second from bottom.

The games yet to be played are West Ham vs Arsenal, Aston Villa vs Blackburn and Tottenham vs Chelsea.

Today’s news… Premiership roundup

Chelsea vs Sheffield United was the first game of this Premiership weekend, in a game Chelsea had to win to pile the pressure on league leaders Manchester United. It was Sheffield United who came closest to scoring first, after being awarded a penalty for a Drogba foul in the area. Webber took a poor penalty though, and Hilario, who is currently filling in for Cudicini and Cech, saved it with ease. Just before half time, Lampard put the blues in front, and early in the second half, Ballack headed goal wrapped up Chelsea’s three points.

With this result in mind, Manchester United had to go to the Reebok, where no team has scored this season. Things were to be different today, with on fire United winning 4-0, through a Rooney hatrick and goal by Ronaldo, putting United back to top of the table. Arsenal, who put on a cracking display last weekend, were held at home to Everton. Liverpool have crept in to the top half of the table after getting a well needed 3-1 win against Aston Villa, who were previously unbeaten this season. Wigan beat Fulham 1-0 away after missing a penalty and having a goal wrongly ruled out. Portsmouth continued their surprising good form, with a 3-1 win against Reading which puts them in fourth. Watford drew 0-0 with Tottenham Hotspur, whilst Saturday’s action finished with another 0-0 draw between Newcastle and Charlton.

Manchester United return to top of the league after beating a poor Liverpool team 2-0 at Old Trafford. Paul Scholes opened the scoring just before half time, on his 500th appearance for the club. Rio Ferdinand went on to seal the victory in the 66th minute, with a wonderful goal. It was Rio’s goal that separated the sides in the same fixture last season, and has shown he’s got quite a taste for scoring against his club’s biggest rivals.

Elsewhere, an impressive Arsenal performance saw them beat Reading 4-0 away from home. Henry bagged two goals, the first after just fifty eight seconds, the latter a penalty from a foul on Fabregas in the box. Hleb and Van Persie also got their names on the scoresheet. Tottenham Hotspur beat London rivals West Ham 1-0, with a goal from Mido just before half time. Bolton beat Blackburn 1-0 with a goal from Campo just after the hour mark. Bolton keeper Jaaskelainen, who has only let in four goals this season, saved two penalties in three minutes, whilst Blackburn’s Nolan was sent off for a second yellow card. Middlesborough beat North East rivals with a Yakubu goal five minutes from time.
