Red Card Lampard: It Wasn’t Drogba’s Fault

Chelsea drew 1-1 away with Bordeaux in last night’s Champions League group stage match. The blues took the lead through Nicolas Anelka, before the evening took a turn for the worst. Bordeaux equalised from a corner after captain John Terry failed to stick with his man, before Frank Lampard was sent off for a second yellow card.

In the days leading up to the game, much of pre-match talk revolved around rumours linking Didier Drogba with a move to Inter Milan. Lampard insists that these reports didn’t interfere with Chelsea’s result.

“I don’t think so,” Lampard responded, when asked if the rumours concerning Drogba had an effect on the result. “We were dedicated to trying to win the game and Didier came on and tried to do that. It is for Didier and the club to talk about.”

Lampard was sent off after the scoreline turned 1-1, meaning he will miss Chelsea’s crucial game against Cluj.

“I thought the sending off was harsh but the referee wanted to give cards out all night and I gave him the opportunity to do it again,” said Lampard. “It is frustrating to miss the final group match because it’s going to be a big game for us. We have to believe that we can beat Cluj at home. Roma and Bordeaux have been tough games and we haven’t got the results we wanted. Now we have to produce at home, which we believe we will do. I don’t think teams have worked us out, it’s more when you get to a certain level teams give you respect. They work hard to stop you playing and that’s what teams are doing to us in the Premier League and in Europe. It’s hard to go through a season and keep performing at the top level and I think it’s fair to say the last few weeks we haven’t been.”
