We’re now into the seventh week this seasons Premier League, and as the table starts to take shape, managers and players alike are being put under excruciating pressure to perform, and with several managers struggling to cope in the competitive division, there may soon be some resignations and some decisions to fire under performing employees.
Although there is a managerial crisis at Newcastle, the most dire manager at the moment is Tottenham Hotspur’s Juande Ramos, who has helped the London side to just two points in six matches, leaving them at the bottom of the table, but it is unexpected that Ramos will lose his job, with several key pundits claiming that he is a brilliant manager and deserves to stay.
The drama at Newcastle may be coming to an end as more and more groups are expressing an interest in buying the club from Mike Ashley, with a group of five South Africans claiming to be very interested and stating that ‘if they took control, then they would bring back Kevin Keegan’, which will undoubtedly go down extremely well with the Magpies fans. Currently, Joe Kinnear is the manager of Newcastle in a bizarre move to hire the former Nottingham Forest boss on a temporary basis until a permanent manager is found. The decision has been criticised by Alan Shearer, who said that Kinnear looked embarrassed to be in the job, adding that ‘they can’t get any worse, it’s a no-lose situation’, referring to the situation at Newcastle. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/
The Premier League saw a few exciting matches, including one of the biggest upsets in recent football history as Hull City beat Arsenal by two goals to one, with Geovanni scoring what is already a contender for goal of the season. The Merseyside derby was also played this weekend between Everton and Liverpool. Both teams played well, but it was Liverpool’s Spanish sensation Fernando Torres who responded to Everton chants by scoring two brilliant goals to win the match for the reds. Torres said that six weeks is too long for a striker to go without scoring, although it was brilliant that his team got the three points. http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/
Chelsea beat Stoke City by two goals to nil in a thrilling encounter in which Boswinga and Anelka scored. Manchester United also won 2-0, playing against Bolton in a match that saw the most controversial penalty of the season. When Ronaldo tripped over the ball everyone thought that Rob Styles was giving a free kick for diving, but in actual fact he had given the penalty. Although Styles apologised for his poor decision, Bolton manager Gary Megson was still enraged, labelling the judgement as ‘nonsense’, adding that he would have more respect for the mistaken referee if he ‘holds his hands up and admits he was wrong’. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
In other games, Blackburn beat a struggling Newcastle side while Tottenham lost away at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park. Wigan, Aston Villa and West Ham all won by two goals to one against Manchester City, Sunderland and Fulham respectively, while West Brom travelled to the Riverside to beat Middlesborough by one goal to nil.
