Gilberto has today left Arsenal FC and is moving to Greek side Panathinaikos. The fee for the Brazilian midfielder is believed to be around just one million pounds, which is a bargain considering his large amounts of ability. The new three year contract with the Greek club ensures that he is the highest paid player in Greek football.

The thirty one year old has been with the London club for six years after joining Arsenal FC in 2002 from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro. Arsenal paid around four and a half million pounds, but the excellent performances by the player warrant the loss Arsenal have made. Gilberto is best known for his power and strength in midfield, but also combines that with brilliant skill and agility, as well as a keen eye for short passes, which often leave the opposition tired and confused.

Gilberto said that he has ambitions to win more titles, and he claimed that he just couldn’t do that at Arsenal FC. He also claimed that he just couldn’t refuse the offer, which just confirms the fact that he will be highly paid at Panathinaikos. Gilberto also added that he was confident that he could help the Super League Greece side secure a place in the second round of the Champions League in the next season, and that he will continue to ‘give his best’.

Arsenal FC now faces the challenge of finding someone to replace the veteran player, and they are looking for fresh young talent, with Frenchman Samri Nasri being the most likely signing for the club, although Abou Diaby and Aaron Ramsey are also said to be transfer targets for the London side, although Arsenal still have the likes of Cesc Fabregas to fall back on, should they not find an immediate replacement for the Brazilian.
